Brake pipe flanging with flaring tool

What is beading?

Beading is a term used in metalworking. It describes the upsetting and bending of sheet metal or pipes at the edges.

Where does flanging come from?

Flanging on the wheel arches

In the automotive sector, flanging is often used to work on the wheel arches after lowering a vehicle to make it more maneuverable. Even with the use of wide tires and corresponding rims wheel arches must be flanged frequently. In duch a scenario, the sheet metal edge on the wheel arches with a special flanging tool for fenders is compressed inwards, in order to create more space between the tire and the plate of the wheel arch, the tires have more free space and do not touch the sheet.

Renewing brake and hydraulic lines using a flaring tool

Flaring tools are also used for the work on brake and hydraulic lines as well as other steel, aluminum, brass, copper and copper pipes.

Since brake lines can be damaged by environmental influences and corrosion, they must be changed from time to time. Often the TÜV makes a vehicle owner aware of a damaged brake line. Sometimes only a part of the brake line is defective, so that it only has to be partially renewed. In this case, only a portion of the brake pipe is replaced and connected to the intact piece of old brake pipe by means of a brake pipe connector.
To replace or insert a brake pipe connector is usually crimped, i. The edge at the brake pipe end is bent so that the union nut of the brake pipe connector can be bolted firmly to the brake pipe.

Bending a brake hose properly is not that easy. In any case, a brake line flaring device should be used here. With this, the flanging is very comfortable, but should still be carried out by the car specialist, because you can do a few things wrong here.

The brake line flaring tool looks a bit like a vise. It is supplied with different jaw attachments for different sizes of brake and hydraulic lines.
The brake pipe is then pushed into the clamping jaws of the flanging and tightened. It must be ensured that the line is really tight.

On the other side pressure is then exerted on the edges at the end of the brake pipe with a pressure piece, wherein the edges are compressed and bent. This is done by turning a toggle, which pushes the pressure piece further and further against the pipe and upsets it and bends over. In a hydraulic crimper this is done by a hydraulic drive.

Due to the effect of pressure on the line, an outward bulge is created at the end of the brake line, which looks like a small funnel and ensures that the screw connection of the connecting piece of the brake line have a snug fit and that the line can not move.

Attention: A brake pipe should never be replaced by a layman alone, but always be carried out by a specialist or under the guidance of a specialist! b>

Outside flanging and inside flanging

In the brake line flanging we just described one speaks of an outer curl, since here the bead occurs from the beading bulges outwards. In addition to the outer flanging, there is also the inner flanging, in which the edges of the metal part to be processed are bent inward or compressed.
